VISITING LECTURE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW, UK GAVE LECTURES IN UNIVERSITAS SYIAH KUALA

The Department of Agricultural Product Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Syiah Kuala (THP FP USK) organized an International General Lecture titled “Food Safety Around the World” on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. The lecture took place in the Multi-Purpose Room, FP USK, from 09.00 to 12.00 WIB. The invited speaker for this activity was Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova, a senior lecturer from the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine, The University of Glasgow, UK. The 150 attendees were comprised of students, lecturers, and professors from the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. 

This International General Lectureactivity is one of activities that can be carried out with World Class University (WCU) Grant under the EQUITY Visiting Lecture Scheme. The activity began with remarks from the Dean of FP USK and was opened by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of USK, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agussabti, M.Si., who in his speech conveyed that the collaboration between the two universities can certainly develop science and technology, according to USK’s vision to become an innovative, independent, and leading socio-technopreneur university at the global level. Through the International General Lecture activity, it was expected to provide benefits for all participants. Additional knowledge and experience can be used to improve the quality of teaching materials for lecturers. For students, this public lecture could increase the development of insight, creativity, knowledge, and interest to continue working.

The EQUITY Visiting Lecture Scheme can carry out a series of activities, including this International General Lecture, with funding from the World Class University (WCU) Grant. The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of USK, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agussabti, M.Si., opened the activity with remarks from the Dean of FP USK, emphasizing that collaboration between the two universities can undoubtedly advance science and technology, aligning with USK’s vision of becoming a leading, innovative, and independent socio-technopreneur university on a global scale. We anticipate that the International General Lecture activity will yield benefits for all participants. Lecturers can use their additional knowledge and experience to enhance the quality of their teaching materials. Attending this lecture can also help students develop insights, creativity, knowledge, and an interest in working. The core activity of the International General Lecture is led by Dr. Ir. Yusya’ Abubakar, M.Sc., IPU., Asean Eng., as moderator. In his presentation, Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova said that the application of food safety is a complex issue where human expectations and habits, infrastructure, and legal framework have a very important role. Food safety also requires a Transdisciplinary One Health approach.  In the discussion session, both lecturers and students enthusiastically asked about the culture of food safety.

On 2 May 2024, Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova gave another guest lecture on Food Safety course (TPI 266) for the 4th semester of Agricultural Product Technology Department students. The topic of Good Implementation of SSOP (Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures) and HACCP (Hazards Analysis Critical Control Points) was opened by the Dean of FP USK, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sugianto, Ph.D. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sugianto, Ph.D., expressed his welcome and gratitude to Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova, who was willing to join the lecture activity, especially at FP USK. We anticipate continuing this visit with additional activities to enhance FP USK’s role in the international arena. In the 2ndInternational Guest Lecture moderated by Prof. Dr. -Ing. Sri Haryani, S.TP., M.Sc., Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova said that the application of HACCP can improve food safety assurance because there is no zero risk in a food product manufacturing process. Small and medium enterprises urgently need this support to understand and implement HACCP so where it comes from needs to be assessed. This is because although food safety culture can provide many benefits, various limitations on its effective application can also occur. The guest lecture activity was ended with the signing of the Implementation of Agreement (IA), the presentation of plaques and photos together with the dean of FP USK.

Dr. Rodrigo Nova also gave a guest lecture in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) on 7 May 2025 entitled “The Role of Veterinarians in Public and Global Health”. This lecture was opened by the dean of FKH USK, drh. Teuku Reza Ferasyi, M.Sc., Ph.D. and was held in the FKH auditorium. In his speech, he also expressed his welcome and gratitude to Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova. He hoped that this this cooperation between USK and University of Glasgow could grow in the future as Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova is also an assessor of international accreditation agency which is known as EAVE. In his talk, Dr. Rodrigo J. Nova mentioned that veterinary public health training is essential core competence where veterinarians play a role in both public and global health. Coordination and interaction with other professionals are needed. Exposure to food processing environments must do activity and effective control of animal diseases at global level require capacity. This guest lecture activity was led by drh. Rosalia, M.Anim.Sc. and was closed by giving the certificate by Director of Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Dr. drh. Nurliana, M.Si.
